Luck doesn’t come to you. You create it.

FOOTBALL PROGRESSION PATH

Helping you create opportunities in football

Hey Reader,

Most people are waiting for a call.

They think that one day, someone in the football industry will give them their breakthrough. That if they just stay ready and work hard in silence, the right person will eventually notice.

Here’s the truth: no one is coming to hand you your breakthrough.

You have to earn it - by creating your own luck.

The Myth of “Getting Lucky”

Luck is often seen as this random, uncontrollable force. Some people get it. Others don’t. End of story.

But that’s not how it really works.

In reality, you can increase your chances of being lucky. You can engineer it. Shape it. All by increasing what’s called your luck surface area.

It’s simple. The more places you show up, the more people who see your work, the more conversations you start - the more likely it is that something positive happens.

3 Ways to Create More Luck

Here’s how you make yourself more “lucky” in football - even when it feels impossible:

1. Be in the right places.

Think about where the people you want to work with actually are.

Sporting directors. Heads of recruitment. Analysts and scouts. They’re attending events, speaking at conferences, joining online communities, and spending time on platforms like LinkedIn.

Get in those rooms, virtual or not. That’s where luck lives.

2. Share your work consistently.

When you share your analysis, your scouting reports, your football thinking - you're creating digital touch-points.

Even if no one says anything at first, people are watching. They’re forming an idea of who you are. They're learning about you. Their building a connection.

Over time, that builds trust. And in football, trust leads to opportunities.

3. Speak to people.

No career in football moves forward in isolation.

The roles you’ll land will come through people who already know you - your mindset, your skills, your values. Whether online or in person, keep building those relationships. Your connections are vital.

Every conversation is a seed. Most take time to grow. That’s normal.

Luck Isn't Magic

Every opportunity I’ve had in football has come through people I’ve built real connections with - often over years. Not by chance. Not by cold applications. But by showing up, sharing, and staying consistent.

So if you’re feeling stuck, stop waiting for luck to arrive.

Start building the conditions where luck becomes inevitable.

Have a great week.

Liam

FOOTBALL PROGRESSION PATH Helping you create opportunities in football Hey Reader, On Saturday, I watched a group of people who had never met in person sit around tables, introduce themselves, and start talking about football careers like they’d known each other for years. That was the Recruitment Room’s first ever in-person event. A Hotel, Three Speakers, and a League Two Game The format was simple. Three guest speakers at Casa Hotel in Chesterfield, followed by lunch, a League Two match,...

FOOTBALL PROGRESSION PATH Helping you create opportunities in football Hey Reader, Everyone tells you to find a mentor. Get in front of someone senior. Build relationships with people who can open doors. That’s not bad advice. But it’s not where the real value is. The relationships that changed my career the most were with people at a similar level as me. Not way above. Not way below. Right alongside. The people who got me here Before I had any kind of role in football, I was sharing work...

FOOTBALL PROGRESSION PATH Helping you create opportunities in football Hey Reader, I was at the Field of Play conference in Manchester on Friday. Nine speakers. Premier League, Ajax, The Athletic, Hoffenheim, the England Women's team, the Seattle Seahawks. Every single one of them came back to the same point. Not data. Not models. Not tools. Communication. The Head of Football Analytics at Ajax said something that stuck with me. "Complexity should always be available but never enforced." She...
